1. Unbox & Connect
Open your Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Ledger Stax box. You’ll find your device, a USB cable, and a recovery sheet. Connect your Ledger to your computer or mobile device using the USB cable.

2. Initialize Your Device
Press the side buttons to turn it on. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose a PIN code (remember, this is your first line of physical defense). Never share your PIN.

3. Write Down Your Recovery Phrase
This is the most critical step. Your device will generate a unique 24-word recovery phrase. Write each word in exact order on your provided recovery sheet. Never digitize it: no photos, no cloud, no typing. This phrase is the master key to your entire wallet. Store it safely, like cash or a passport.

4. Install Ledger Live
Download Ledger Live, our official desktop and mobile app, from Ledger.com only. Beware of fake app stores.

5. Add Your Accounts

1. What happens if I lose my Ledger device?
Your crypto is not stored on the device itself but on the blockchain. Your device only secures your private keys. As long as you have your 24-word recovery phrase, you can fully restore your wallet on a new Ledger device. Without the recovery phrase, your funds are permanently lost. This is why its safekeeping is paramount.

2. Is Ledger Live mandatory? Can I use other apps?
While Ledger Live is our official, all-in-one companion app for easy management, your Ledger device is compatible with over 50 third-party wallets and applications (like MetaMask, Phantom, and others) through the "Connect" feature. This lets you interact with DeFi, NFTs, and various blockchains while your keys remain secure in your Ledger.

3. How do I ensure I’m buying a genuine Ledger?
Only buy from Ledger.com or our official authorized resellers. A genuine Ledger device will always prompt you to set up a new PIN and generate a new recovery phrase during setup. If a device arrives with a pre-written recovery phrase, it is a scam—do not use it.

4. Can my Ledger be hacked?
The Secure Element chip in Ledger devices is designed to be physically tamper-proof and keeps your private keys completely isolated from internet-connected devices. To date, no Ledger device has ever been compromised through its hardware or firmware. The biggest risks remain phishing attacks (where users are tricked into sharing their phrase) and physical theft of the recovery sheet.
